Artist Statement
A long journey of exploring Chinese calligraphy establishes my aesthetic tendency with the emphasis on power. Line, which is the key to the overall visual effect in any art media, is the main focus of my attempt to a convey tender outline but strong inner. A representation of all hard straight lines is too stiff, rough, and ornery while the one with only soft and thin curves shows too much tininess and unoriginality without individuality. Therefore, I break down my composition into a mix of curves which are relative to but different from both massive and elegant straight lines to be a way out of expressing delicate appearance merged with unyielding on the inside.
I work consistently with this concept on different media such as painting, drawing, print making, and animation, and my favorite subjects — natural elements and precipitate inspiration from everyday life. By working on lines in my Wind series, I express the beauty of wind, rendering both strong inner power and graceful randomization outside. I seek to reveal stabilization, purity, connotation to the audience — unrestrained and free movements with dignity and vigorousness implied, and grace and elegancy with decorousness on the inside.
What’s more, I like the existence of beauty between concealment and store. Every single moment when a line tracing has turns of angles highlights its inner power; it has firm character behind a gentle appearance. It strengthens and deepens emotion; it is the convey of the artistic emotion that produces beauty and power; it lets me vent my feelings laxatively.
